As a patriotic and educational organization, the Sons of the American Revolution, especially our Color Guard, frequently displays and carries various historic and contemporary flags representative of the United States, United Colonies, individual states, Revolutionary War battles and the SAR.  In an effort to promote accuracy and consistency, information gleaned from the 1777 and 1814 flag legislations, United States Code Title 36, the North American Vexillological Association, the Smithsonian Institution, the U.S. Army 3rd Infantry "Old Guard" and other reputable resources is presented.  There are many questions concerning flag history that have been lost to the ages and some information is ambiguous,if not contradictory.  The INSSAR is not the final authority on flag protocol and etiquette, yet the information is posted in good faith as being a reliable guideline based upon available sources.
